Sacraments of Commitment

Sacraments of Commitment/Vocation:

Sacraments of Commitment or Vocation are initiated by God and call a person into a

specific life-calling.  These Sacraments differ from ministry in that, once received, they

are for life whereas the call to ministry can change over time and through differing

situations.  The two Vocational Sacraments are Holy Orders which include the call to be

a deacon, priest, or bishop and marriage in which one man and one woman are called to

form a unique relationship open to producing natural children within the context of

their union.  Each of these sacraments is a way to live out our Baptism and

Confirmation.  You might say the vocation is the context in which our salvation is

lived.  Because the more common calling for the majority of Catholic Christians is

marriage, we will begin with the Sacrament of Marriage.
